Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the developing world. About 80 percent of the rural Haitian population lives in poverty and the situation has deteriorated over the past decade.
The staggering level of poverty in Haiti is associated with many other issues. Life expectancy is only 57. Less than half of the population is literate. Health conditions are poor; vaccination coverage for children, for example, is only about 25 percent. Only about one-fourth of the population has access to safe water. Haiti's population continues to grow at a high rate estimated at almost 200,000 people per year.
The recent 7.0 magnitude earthqauke that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 is the worst natural disaster to strike the western hemisphere in known history.
